During the holiday season it’s so easy to go broke, if I can keep it real. Stores are having sales, Christmas is coming, and the list goes on. I must admit the roads are packed, stores have longer waiting lines, and the thrill to shop in stores or online is exciting. With that being said, it’s ok to shop, but don’t go broke in the process! Bills are still due, money still should be saved, and running up a credit card is not the move. There are five ways to not go broke this holiday season, which includes taking advantage of sales, making a list, creating a budget, handling your business first, and focusing on yourself less.
1. Do you know how much money you can save with apps and coupons? I recently went shopping at Belk and saved on my Belk app! The same thing goes for Victoria’s Secret! I encourage you to download these apps even if it’s just for the season. Also, check your mail box for coupons! Paying full price during the holiday season can leave your pockets hurting unless you just got the money to do it without a discount.
2. Make a list honey, because it’s better to know where you’re going and what you’re getting! For example, imagine going into a store full of sales and great things not knowing what you’re getting! You will probably end up shopping and buying way more for yourself and others. A list gives you clarity and the mindset to focus. It also helps with not overspending and wasting time.
3. Do you have a budget? I know in the past I never had a budget and ended up looking confused come January! No, I didn’t go broke, but I did hit my bank accounts hard! You can call that over spending and being 100% careless! Thank God I’m a lot smarter and wiser now. Having a budget helps you not go into debt and it helps you have control. Let’s all agree that a budget can be helpful and prevent reckless shopping.
4.Did you pay your bill? Did you give your 10% in church? If I can keep it real, don’t get so busy spending that you get behind with your business! Make sure you handle what’s important first and then start your holiday spending. Imagine doing it the other way around! Everything would look good to others, but behind closed doors, your business wouldn’t be looking like everything is falling part.
5. So, I have a problem. I love shopping for others and myself at the same time. This is so dangerous, so I decided to stop. I love seeing something cute for someone and thinking I also need something. My bill then goes from $50.00 to $100 really quick! Warning, during this season focus on you less and others more. I do know being a blessing is a blessing and sometimes you have to treat yourself but remember to also bless others as well.
The most important tip I didn’t include above is pray before you shop! God will not let you go broke if you let him guide in your holiday season. Cheers to shopping and doing it the smart way.
